A Fairy Tale Splendor

 

From Martha Graham’s Dance Company in New York and The Staatsballet in Berlin to Russia’s Bolshoi and Mikhailovsky Theatres, Serbian costume and stage designer Angelina Atlagić constantly reimagines the aesthetics of both stage and costume design, be it theatre, opera or ballet. Since graduating from the Department of Stage Costume at the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade, Angelina has combined masterful craftmanship, a sense of lavishness, an eye for a detail and a sensibility for the surreal to create highly artistic costumes. Her personal language of expression could thus be described as a fairy-tale splendor, through which she merges history and fantasy into a unique artistic vision. 

 

Angelina has worked on more than 150 productions across the world, in Germany, Russia, Serbia, Greece, Spain and Japan to name but a few. Some of her most distinctive designs include stage and costume design for Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, La Bayadere, Alice Behind the Looking Glass, Dracula, Midsummer Nights Dream, Carmen. Her work has received widespread national and international recognition and she has won multiple awards.  Theatre Journal Scena pronounced her the Best Costume Designer in Serbia four times in a row (1995-1999). She also won awards for Best Costume Design in Russia (2002), Greece (2003) and Spain (2009). In 2013 Angelina Atlagić received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Applied Artists and Designers of Serbia.

 

In recognition of her achievements, she was included in the book, Exceptional Women of Serbia of the 20th and the 21st Century (Zepter Book World 2016), a compilation of 100 women who have marked the history and culture of Serbia.
